Sri Krishna Matha, Udupi
The spiritual heart of Tulunadu and the birthplace of the legendary Udupi vegetarian cuisine.
Overview
Centuries of Devotion
Founded in the 13th century by the Vaishnavite saint Madhvacharya, the Sri Krishna Matha is renowned worldwide not just as a place of worship, but for its unique traditions. Chief among them is the 'Kanakana Kindi', an intricately carved silver-plated window through which the deity is worshipped.
The temple is surrounded by eight Mathas (monasteries) that take turns managing the temple's daily rituals and its massive kitchen, which feeds thousands of pilgrims daily and gave rise to the famous 'Udupi cuisine'.
